Welcome to this latest edition of Workbench and all the news, updates and exclusive announcements from the fascinating world of Airfix modelling.

We are certainly starting with a bang and there will be absolutely no let-up in the pace as we bring you this 92nd edition of our blog. With the publication of the latest Airfix model range at the beginning of January, we still find ourselves with plenty of new information to bring you and following on from the Blackburn Buccaneer new tooling project details featured in our previous blog, we will be returning to the work of our talented design engineers in this latest edition and yet another of their new tooling announcements.

Providing our readers with an interesting contrast however, whilst the Buccaneer featured the work of one of our most senior product designers, this latest review will be looking at the talents of one of the newest members of the design team and an incredibly proud achievement for him. Handed the challenge of producing an accurate scale representation of one of the most capable late first generation jet fighters, we look at the design work and challenges which faced a young designer who will hopefully go on to have many successful Airfix kit releases to his name.

We also report on the start of the model show season with a series of exclusive pictures from the recent event held at the University of Bolton stadium and look forward to what should be a hectic couple of months on the show circuit. We seem to have rather a lot to fit in to this latest edition, so we had better make a start.

In the first Armoured Fighting Vehicles appeared in the ever-expanding range of Airfix kits. The s and s are considered by many as the golden age of kit building and the enthusiastic schoolboys and young men building these kits became known as the Airfix Generation. The hobby went into decline in the s as plastic kits gave way to video games, but the hobby has recently undergone a revival as the original members of the Airfix Generation, now at the end of careers and family commitments, take a nostalgic look back at their childhoods.

Some, like the author, will become once again absorbed by the hobby, but many will be content to buy a few old kits — others are coming to the hobby from an entirely new perspective. All will be delighted to find a new book that tells the early days of the hobby from a model tank perspective. Tom Cole returned to the hobby of military modelling after a long career in the Royal Air Force. New Tooling Britainrsquo;s bomber force at the beginning of the Second World War only consisted of around aircraft and was made up of both light and medium bomber squadrons. The most capable medium bomber of the day was the twin-engined Vickers Wellington, which first flew and entered RAF service with No.

The production aircraft bore little resemblance to the prototype aircraft and compared to contemporary medium bombers already in service, the Wellington appeared to be much more advanced in design and an aircraft to be feared by any potential enemy. Its sleek monoplane design and heavy defensive armament placed the new Wellington as one of the most advanced and capable medium bombers in the world.

Perhaps the most significant feature of the Wellingtons design was the adoption of a geodetic construction method, which was developed by famous British engineer and inventor Barnes Wallis. Duralumin W-beams were used to form a metal lattice-work construction on to which wooden battens would be screwed, which would then allow the doped fabric outer skin of the aircraft to be attached.

The resultant fuselage was relatively light in weight but possessed great strength and whilst this method of construction posed challenges for companies engaged in manufacturing Wellington bombers, the inherent strength of the design would prove crucial when the aircraft was thrust into combat. Capable of withstanding significant battle damage, numerous RAF Wellingtons managed to bring their crews back home, when other bombers would have failed to do so.
